Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of renting my gear instead of buying?
Camping gear has evolved by leaps and bounds over the last decade, making the experience more fun and comfortable. But even most active campers only go a few times a year on average, and good camping and backpacking equipment usually costs upward of $1000 for everything you need. Whether you're looking to try out camping or backpacking for the first time or simply want quick access to great equipment without the premium price-tag, ExperienceGear helps save you money and space by providing on demand equipment for your next adventure. Our rentals also allow you to dial in on the type of equipment you like first without committing to purchasing anything.
What areas do you ship to?
ExperienceGear currently serves all of California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona.
How do I receive my gear?
You will receive all of your gear before the first day of your rental period, so if your booking begins Wednesday you will get your gear by Tuesday night at the latest. All shipping is offered free of charge for kits or orders over $100. We require around 3 days advance notice to ensure you get all the gear you need in time.
How do I return my gear?
Simply mail back your gear anytime before 3 pm the last day of your rental, and we provide a prepaid shipping label with all orders. You return your gear in the same box used to deliver it. Just make sure all the gear is dry and free of any debris, put it in the box, and use the prepaid label to return your gear via UPS.
Is the Equipment Cleaned?
Yes! All of our gear is quality checked and vigorously cleaned before being reissued. We never "overuse" our equipment, and all gear is replenished regularly.
How do you make sure gear is sized correctly?
We only carry equipment that can be tailored to fit, and our backpacking gear can accommodate people from about 4' 10" feet tall to 6' 5" feet tall. Each order will come with information on how to adjust the equipment to your body profile. Unfortunately we don't current carry kids' backpacks, but we're looking into it!
How do you select your equipment?
The ExperienceGear team has logged well over 1,000 miles and 2,000 hours backpacking and camping, and we take our gear very seriously. All of our equipment comes from premium brands and has been top rated by sources like the Outdoor Gearlab.
How do I get help using my gear?
In addition to our blog, we will provide some instruction and resources for using your gear by email and with your camp kit. We ask that users take inventory and try using all their equipment before going out into the field, so that they have some practice setting things up and ensure they have all the gear they need.
What Else Should I Bring?
Additional equipment you bring will always depend on the type of trip you're going on, and you can check out our camping guide blog for preparing supplemental items like food and clothing. We always recommend you check with the agency managing the area you're about to explore to see if you need specific permits or equipment like bear canisters. We are also unable to ship fuel canisters for our stove because of shipping restrictions, so remember to pick up some isobutane from a local sporting goods store before you leave (it's usually around $5).
What type of conditions is the gear designed for?
Our gear is designed for general 3-season use, and all of our sleeping bags are rated for at least 40 degrees. That being said, we don't recommend using our equipment for cold-weather camping chillier than 40 degrees. Always make sure to check the conditions of your destination, and shoot us an email if you have specific questions about the equipment.
